But, regardless. Percy is the resident Good Child in Hannibal's books, and though it's a bit belated, he ends up approaching Percy as he had on Monday. He gives Percy a small nod with a intent expression, and though he doesn't say anything, Percy can probably guess what Hannibal wants to talk about. It's also a good sign, since if Hannibal has something to talk about in the first place, that's good news.
Once Hannibal has led them away to somewhere private, he'll begin simply. ]

The Deputy controls someone's fate on Thursdays. They are the one charged with filling the stocks. Though they also have the option of using the jail instead to protect someone. [ Which... It's fairly clear which one they same to favor. ] The Sheriff did also mention that they hunt the Bounties. So their job is seemingly two-fold, perhaps for good and bad.

[It's the good and bad that makes him wonder where, perhaps, Hannibal stands on it. Pretty much all of it sounds bad since it's still people murdering people.]

Date: 2017-02-09 04:55 am (UTC)He didn't say anything. He seemed to feel elaboration wasn't necessary. It would lead me to believe that they may be the Bandits, potentially another word for them, but... I also had a different impression of what the Doctor was meant to do as well.

—I may have earned another reward from helping Jason and Shinnosuke as well, so I could follow up and ask again. But considering he was amenable to explaining all of them, if I return with more questions, I would like at least a few to see just how far I can go with a reward for information.

Keep the reward though...even if I think you'll be cashing in on a lot of them in the future. [He'll explain what that means later.] What about the other roles then? You mentioned that the Doctor wasn't exactly what it sounded like.

Though to the topic of the Doctor, Hannibal does breath out a short laugh, though it's rather dry. ]
I was correct, as it turns out. It is a misnomer. They are the one giving us things, such as the camera, the trap, and now... explosives, I believe I heard? [ So help them God ] They are also able to revive one person entirely over the course of the game, apparently.

I don't know. [ He pauses, briefly wishing he had a better answer, but he decides to go with the honest one: ] Truth be told, I did not ask. There are a certain set of things about this place and the people here that are admittedly beyond my understanding as something real instead of fiction. The idea that the dead can be revived at all is very thoroughly in the category. I wouldn't even know where to begin to ask "hows" and "whys".

I've simply heard so many stories that sound like just that to me—stories—that I've started to take many of them in stride. It makes focusing on the more important parts easier, but a simple acceptance is only a point solution.
[ Though at the very least, the bizarre doesn't quite come up often as being important. It is often the bigger picture items which he puts his focus to, such as the last set of roles. ]
They're one and the same. The Sheriff called them a joint role. Fittingly, they work out of the saloon, and they pick a person to investigate each week. They're able to find out if that person has a role or not. They also get to choose a person to send a message to each week, but the notes themselves are anonymous.

Or they were working with the Bandits that week, saw Manfred as a threat and helped set the stage so Higekiri and the other Bandit could kill him. I don't disagree, for the record. I was suggesting sharing it more widely with the idea of obscuring our identities somehow, but I should have been clearer. My concern is more as to whether it would be beneficial or not. The recklessness might only increase, which is why I would hesitate. But on the other hand, it may identify some of these people.

Then the other five are the Bounties, presumably. [ Or Bandits? Whatever. ] That's more than I would have thought, admittedly. It's also worrying, since that means just under half of the people here... [ He shakes his head ] Without knowing their intentions, they can't be trusted. Some of them may have wider, better plans, such as perhaps the Doctor, but others, clearly not. It seems like the Deputy has chosen which side they're preferring to play, considering their opportunity to protect people instead.

Now you can see why I'm starting to doubt people, right? I don't know what to do here when there's a group of people definitely working against us.

What I wish is that there was an easier way to catch the Bandits. Figure out how they're picked and how they keep slipping past us. There has to be something behind that.

It's normally something he'd guess on first, but he had only spoken to Annabeth once in passing during a trial, so he has to ask instead. ] Did Annabeth note anyone in particular? Or did you notice her irritating anyone?
[ It's the start of trying to figure out a pattern, at least. There's a bit more to work with there than the alternative. ]

He doesn't say more, because he can hardly say he does the same, and he'd guess the same of Percy. Of course, Hannibal's "trust" takes a very different form from Percy's, but it's similar enough in his mind to think that he often takes people as they are. He just usually is able to see and know more of that than they might like him to. ]
...The most amusing? I would have said people with a tendency towards violence at the start, but now, knowing people better... I would say the opposite. People who want to do good. People who would actually not like to kill others.

Or something close to it. The term is technically colloquial. Oftentimes when faced with a person that I would use the term for, there is no real way to describe them. That is part of why these people are so often the most frightening ones in society.

And that is why I wouldn't necessarily recommend stepping into their shoes. But that is how you would predict the Sheriff's decisions, I would think.
